Crazy thing we say to promot buying a certain gun.

I was talking with a male Nurse at a clinic I visit we talked about buying 1911s. I told him how I bought and built mines. He stated that he heard some pretty nice things about Rock Island 1911s. He went on to say that $479 he would buy one and from what he heard that it will shoot with $2800 Les Baer and Ed Browns.

All I could say is that's not the information I have on the RIs 1911s, from what I understand they are a good start on building a 1911. They come in different upgrade package as most 1911s do. I informed him that you get what you pay for he mentioned the basic Mil spec RI, I informed him that the gun would be solid but far from a near custom 1911. What you should expect is function and some reliabllity up to 500 rounds then it should start being very reliable with round ball ammo. If he wanted to shoot JHP that might need some gun smithing for ramp polishing and throating. I told him that I don't know where RI rates as a 1911 but its nowhere near LB or EB. But still a good buy for the money.

Now he didd have it right on defensive loads around $25-$35 @50 or 20 rounds pending the brand. He is trying to find reloading dies he already reloads for 38spl and 30-30.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the $479 RI is not the LB or ED. How would you have told him? Without the dumbass a $400 ain't gonna compare to even a $1100 one.

You pretty much covered it. You could have added that with his salary, he could close escrow and get a 1911 built by Wilson Combat.

Both can run all the time. The LB will shoot tighter.....but, if he's not capable.....then maybe it's all the same to him.

Personally, I like to know it's me and not the gun when I miss.

Tell them the LB and the RI are the same until the LB gets 40 to 60 hours of hand work from a 1911 gunsmith. That's where it's transformed from a very basic 1911 to almost a work of art. Les Bear (according to a TV show) test fires every one of his guns before it leaves the shop. Yes, the RI will shoot with them, but it is not equal to them.

How much tighter and at what range? I know you could make use of the difference, but what about the average Joe? Are they erroneously choosing a $2800 1911 over a $500 1911?
