Re: shooting steel jacketed ammo AK 47
cool science lesson. cant I just use hoppes powder solvent lol? If not, I assume I will be fine cleaning the gun after I get home from the range.

Re: shooting steel jacketed ammo AK 47
They say that hoppes alone will not dissolve the salts. I have yet to see any scientific proof (never really looked deeper into it) but just boil up some water on the stove and pour it through a thin funnel down the barrell. Throw a patch with hoppes solvent down the barrel and then a patch of oil, all done!

Re: shooting steel jacketed ammo AK 47
The first couple pics have Chinese steel core in sealed tins.
The big tin with gray boxes is Egyptian and came 2K per.
These couple of shots show the lead core Egyptian and steel core Chinese cut along with a couple of the German practice ammo which came in blister packs. I cut one of those and saw it is a plastic core. This German low power will cycle in AK's but not very well in SKS's
I was digging around the garage and came up with a bit more than I thought. Sometimes I think I have too much time on my hand.

Re: shooting steel jacketed ammo AK 47
I just cut one of the rounds I have in half. It has something like a plastic core with a lead collar at the base, and the jacketing is brass coated steel.

Re: shooting steel jacketed ammo AK 47
Mercury has not been used in small arms ammunition since the mid 1930's!
The culprit is the Potassium Chlorate in the primer mix.
It's used as an oxidixer ( provides the Oxygen for the primer to fire ).
When the Chlorate burns ,it forms Chloride ( just like in Salt ).
Salt is not good to leave on rustable steel ,especially when it's damp out.
Enough of any water based cleaning product will remove the salts.
Hot water is great because it's self drying and of course oil the dry metal.
Remember these weapons were meant to operate under the most sever
conditions. Even rust. LOL
Yes I studied Chemistry, but not at Motel 6.
Oh and Clorate was removed from most US ammo in the early 1950's.
Regards & Safe Shooting,
Steve
