Re: flintlock
I picked up a Renegade about a year ago on Gun Broker. Except for the Hawken, all the old models are discontinued. I wanted a legacy model while they are still around.
While you still can get a good deal on a Thompson Center, most are percussion. Changing to flint from percussion on a TC is very easy, but requires -both- lock and barrel changing, increasing the cost about $150 or so.
If you're patient and have time, you might find a flint TC cheap. They are worth the wait, as they are still considered top shelf of all the production guns.
With a budget cap of $270, he'll be buying a used production gun almost for certain, maybe an inline. Here's an example of what a patient bidder got on Gun Broker for $188...
Keep watching those online gun trading boards, something will eventually show up that fits your needs.
Here's a little out-of-the way place where deals occasionally appear:

Increasing your budget even $100 will greatly improve your selection and reduce the amount of window shopping.Gloria: "65 percent of the people murdered in the last 10 years were killed by hand guns"

Re: flintlock
The best quality for that price range that I know of is Traditions. CVA used to make a flintlock that cost considerably less than that but they may have discontinued it. The CVA is not as nice of a rifle in my opinion.
If you can swing another fifty bucks or so, I'd recommend a Lyman Deerstalker.
Regardless of what you get, I'd recommend getting a .54 cal instead of a .50, especially if you're going to hunt with patched round balls. A .54 is just as easy to shoot and it has more knock down power.
