Default Sigh, "but my friend is a cop and he told me so!!"

Struck up a conversation with an older gentleman today because I noticed the oath keeper bumper sticker on his car. We talked politics and such for a while, it was pleasant. I mentioned the dolt that obama is attempting to put in control of the ATF and how this can directly affect our 2nd amendment freedoms.

Shortly after new york and new jersey were mentioned. This gentleman explained to me how he carries his gun into new jersey every time he goes there. He said it's hard to get a permit, but, "my friend is a chief of police in x town and he said as long as my gun is unloaded and ammo in a seperate container, all locked in my glovebox, i'm ok to bring my gun". My jaw kind of dropped, and I had to inform him immediately that his friend is going to get him put in prison on what would likely amount to felony convictions.

I explained the stipulations about bringing firearms, specifically handguns, into new jersey. His retort was, "but my friend is a chief of police". I explained as politely as I could that it doesn't matter who his friends are because if the state police, or any department other than the one where his friend is the CoP(and even a patrol officer in that department would arrest him), was to detect, for whatever reason, that he had a handgun in his vehicle, he would end up in cuffs and shortly there after prison. I also explained, that it doesn't matter if his CoP friend called whichever department arrested him, because he's still breaking the law, and that's the end of the conversation as far as 99.9% of cops will be concerned. I told him his friend was wrong, and not to ever bring his handgun into new jersey again. Apparently he's been doing this for over a decade... holy shit...

His jaw kind of dropped when I informed him he was breaking the law, a serious law, but he kept going on about his friend, his friend, blah blah... At that point I ended the conversation.

Wow, with friends like that , who needs enemies? Rep inbound for trying to educate the guy, Hopefully you got through to him, or at least planted a seed of doubt that will cause him to dig deeper and confirm the truth of what you told him.

You did what you could. And I bet his cop friend will be getting a call.

A gun owner accepting legal advice from a cop is like a woman accepting beauty tips from Helen Thomas.

And who wants to bet if this guy was ever caught and called his friend the chief... the chief would deny ever telling him that ...not that it would matter anyway.

    So true.

A LEO friend of mine tried to tell me my LTCF didn't allow me to carry a loaded handgun in my vehicle unless the gun was physically attached to me-not on the seat, in the glove box etc. He also said I couldn't carry in Pittsburgh.

At least his bad advice wouldn't get me arrested like the OP's friend!

....and talking on the telephone about breaking the law is also monumentally stupid!

Here is a tip for the old dope and anyone else enamored with LEO's:
DON'T TAKE LEGAL ADVICE FROM COPS!

wow! The stupidity of some folks is astonishing.
    Great story.
