I carry the Hornady Critical Defense 110 grain +P because I like how it performs.

Re: hornady critical vs speer gold dot
Speer and Hornady both have a great reputation. My preference in general is Hornady, mainly because of my experience with thier bullets. Had a Derringer in .38 and it liked the Speer Gold Dot +P better tho, so its really your call. Get a box of each and head to the range...

Re: hornady critical vs speer gold dot
The article below casts some real doubts on the critical defense rounds. I have critical defense rounds but unfortunately no where to shoot out car windows or through trunk lids. If anyone here has the property to do this test, take some pic's of the results .

Re: hornady critical vs speer gold dot
FWIW if you have to shoot through a car door or part of a wall to hit someone then I think the police and courts might not think it was an immediate threat. Shooting through a car window I could see more likely and would be curious to see how the round actually performed then.

Re: hornady critical vs speer gold dot
I'm of the opinion it's better to be prepared for everything you reasonably can and have all bases covered. I like sticking to self defense rounds with a proven street record. In other words, lots of shootings by law enforcement, and well documented results of how bad the scumbags got tore up with consistent positive results. If I can find a round that will penetrate glass, stay on path, and still expand inside an attacker, that's just a plus and something I would consider a blessing if god forbid I ever had to use my firearm in such a manner.
IMO, especially the way I see things heading in this country, people need to take another look at the kind of handguns they carry and the ammunition they keep loaded in it.

Re: hornady critical vs speer gold dot
I use both in various caliber. I carry the Hornady critical defense in short barrel guns and the Gold dots in Compact and full size guns. Really its a win win situation, both are good choices.
