1. Your underwear is still too tight and you've lost that lovin' feeling.
2. There are other forums with the correct way to tint the stock a red color like the Russian AKs.
"Another way of getting the right color and finish is the method used by the Russians. They used Amber Shellac mixed with a red stain.
You can get the same look by mixing 8 parts of Amber Shellac with 4 parts iodine."

Re: RIT DYE / AK furniture
Also aware of tinting the top coat. Haven't tried that yet, although by rushing through the RIT process color does end up in the top coat with the way I do it.
"The correct way". Ha. End result = end result. Color in the wood, color on the surface, and in the top coat. I get better coverage doing it quick and dirty. When I get a scratch or chip you can't even see it.
When all your color is in the top coat, when it chips it shows. Some people prefer this for a more "natural Russian" kind of thing. That's just more work to me.
Everything I used can be had with one trip to Walmart.
Rit dye
Minwax stain and poly
gloves, brushes, rags, sand paper, steel wool.
For maybe $25-30 max.
And this is still quicker.
