Anyway. Here's how this turned out. Here's a few against a chocolate comforter.

Anyway...

So I was messing around with a Bakelite grip the other day and while very brown. It did have some red to it. That started the gears turning. And, evidently my ghetto method of applying RIT dye even works on plastic. (Serious)

Being it was a $3 grip from a set I never planned on using. Who cares right?

But look how it turned out. Keep in mind this is a Romy take off. Not a Bulgy one that has that pink look already. So it started dark brown. And it was beat looking. I smoothed it up some with steel wool first. This made some of the fibers in it show. A little. So after rinsing it I put some crimson RIT on a sponge and wet it down. After letting that sit for about 5 minutes. I went over the RIT with a little stain. I let that sit a few minutes, then dabbed it with a rag. And applied another even layer of RIT with a sponge brush. To dry it quickly I fanned it with a torch. As soon as it starts to dry, but before it crystallizes, I applied the poly top coat with a brush. This mixes it all together a little. And generally makes a sticky mess that doesn't like to dry. (Relax, its how this works) Let it sit for a few hours until its just a little tacky. GENTLY card it with steel wool to dull it ever so slightly. It should be tacky enough to touch, but if you press it should leave a mark. GENTLY rub it with a rag to get the steel wool fodder off of it. And apply final poly layer with the somge brush you used to apply the RIT. Preferably after stamping it out into a cloth first. This is where clean even coverage and slow strokes matter. Bubbles makes the finish feel like sand paper. Let sit a day or 12hrs or so. Viola.

This is actually one of the finishing touches for the old gal. Adjustable gas, I went through the action and smoothed everything I could out. I reworked the fcg into a 2 stage trigger. Minus an optic, which may or may not happen, perhaps just some aftermarket sights. Its basically done.

For sale? Nah. But I'd be happy to replicate it with your rifle/ parts for cash, parts, or ammo.
