2011 NRA Convention

I do belive that next year it's in Pittsburgh April 29-May 1. I would love to attend (hopefully my wife will go along). Has anybody stayed in the downtown area before? Hotel choice? Or is it better to stay in the outskirts? Is preregistering required? There is information at www.nraam.org but it's a bit confusing.

Staying downtown versus in the suburbs is really a matter of budget. There are some nice hotels downtown, Hilton, William Penn etc that are within walking distance of the convention center. These will be more expensive than staying just a few miles away. Staying out of the city means that not only are the rooms less costly but you can also park for free.

A good place to check is the community of Green Tree. There are several hotels there including a Radison. Depending on traffic, these hotels are only about 15 minutes or so from the convention center. The only bad thing about Green Tree is that the dining choices are limited but you can always grab dinner in the city before heading back to your room.

Since I live 20 miles away, I'll be staying at home, but if I was traveling, I'd do whatever I could to find a room downtown.

If you don't want to stay downtown, check out hotels in the North Hills of Pittsburgh (Ross Township) on McKnight Road, zip code 15237. There's a Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn for example. They are both minutes from downtown, you only need to take one major road to get to them, and there are no tunnels to deal with. Tunnel traffic in this city can be a huge headache.

Im on the fence about attending the convention in Pittsburgh. Could anyone offer me any details on what goes on at the conventions. Are they pretty much a big gun show?
