    Default Container Inside a Container

I understand that the law of carrying a longarm in a vehicle is that it must be stored unloaded with the ammunition separate. I was thinking about getting a small rifle and keeping it in an 81mm rocket ammo box, probably inside another bag inside that, can you then store the magazines in that same ammo box, but outside the bag that the rifle is stored within?

How about if the rifle is just inside the container, but the magazines are stored inside a closed container inside the container?

As I understand it, and I can't cite anything to support this, a soft rifle case, with magazines in the outer pockets is ok. Something about "compartments of a container".

Sounds discreet enough, you don't want to draw any extra suspicious scrutiny if you get pulled over.

A friend of mine has flown many times with 3 of those cases as checked luggage. He's come up with a pretty good way of locking them that completely foiled the TSA's attempt at opening them, and they tried everything. Eventually they gave up and let them through.

My plan is to do something very similar, as I'm sure I read GL saying that a locked container cannot be opened without a warrant.

His luck is much better than mine. One time when I got pulled over, the LEO asked if he could look inside some .50 cal ammo boxes in my truck.
Since the boxes contained some very oily/greasy tow chains/hooks/links, (rust prevention and use) and he was not wearing gloves, I was more than happy to let him have a look.

Here's the story if you're interested.

I want some of those boxes, have never seen them in the surplus stores or at gun shows near here.
I think I recall seeing them in a store in Conn. near Groton, years ago.

Know any sources within driving distance in these parts?
Shipping would probably make them too costly.
I do go to NE PA sometimes, Carbon/Monroe County region.

BTW, cool story. Makes me want to avoid airports even more now!

Colemans in Millersburg says they have them. I'm probably going to head up there tomorrow and pick up some.
