    Why not ask your guide?

A friend of mine hunted Africa with a 7MM Rem Mag - SAKO 85 Fin Light

He shot Kudu, Gemsbuck, warthog etc...

I would say ask your guide.

Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it.

I'm looking at a .404 Jeffery right now for around $550, he's a good friend of mine and has a pretty big collection of hunting guns and so on.
He also said he'd throw in the 200 rounds of ammo he had for it for free, which is a damn good deal considering I've heard of .404 going for $4 a round.

It's a custom made rifle from the 1940's, the name on it is Findle & Turner stamped 1949, anyone ever hear of this company or gunsmiths?
I can't find anything on google.

The gun itself is beautiful, the rifling is excellent, cosmetically it's beat up from all the use it's gone through but it's still a sturdy looking and feeling gun, everything works on it.

The 404 Jeffery sounds like a great deal.
I was going to suggest a Ruger #1 Tropical in .416 Rigby or in .458 Winchester.
You should be able to find one in your price range.

What's wrong with a short barrel .50 BMG? Just curious. I don't know anything about hunting large, dangerous game.

Where do you plan on storing the rifle during the 2 months while you're in South Africa?

The people on this forum tell me it's frowned upon, my guide is telling me otherwise.
He named four big calibers, .404 Jeffery, .416 Rigby, .375 H&H and .50 BMG if I had it, I told him I had a .404 and he said that would be fine.

Dunno what the fuss is, they apparently welcome you to use .50 BMG as long as it's in bolt action configuration only, no semi automatic weapons are allowed unless you're a citizen of the country.

My guide told me they would store it at their lodge for a small $50 fee per month and assured me it would be locked away in a special gun safe until I'm ready to hunt.

He seems very accommodating and very intelligent about the hunting there.
I think his name was Raymond King?
Anyway, he seems extremely nice, but then again this is all a days work for him as well.
