I'm new to handguns and bought an SR9 for Christmas, well it's fast approaching 1000 rounds, without a hitch I might add.
What should I be looking for? after how many rounds will things start to wear or break?
I strip and clean after each session, I'm not seeing any wear on it, in fact it feels so much better now than when it was new
just wondering how many rounds a gun like the Ruger will take before it starts to deteriorate?

You can count on spending much more money on ammo then you will spend replacing guns due to wear.

Start watching for frequent malfunctions.

It's recommended to switch out springs at 5000 rounds.

You have a long way to go before you wear out a Ruger. I'm not a big fan of Ruger (thats just me), but I will give them what they are due, and that is a long history of guns that just don't wear out. Tuff as nails, made to last, nuff said.

Do not listen to these people. Everyone knows that after shooting more than 2000 rounds through a gun you need a new one. At least that is what I told my wife. Then she started to carry a gun and she found out I lied. Now I'm screwed.

No experience with Ruger autos, but I know the old Security Six I used to own started to break in after 20 years...

I know of people who shoot "cheap" guns like the Rock Island 1911's in competition who have them into the 50,000 rounds, and other than periodically changing recoil springs, observe very little wear.

Most Modern Day guns should last until at least your grandkid starts shooting it. I have a few going back to the 30's & 40's that all shoot just fine. I recently inherited a Civil War Springfield Musket I plan to shoot when the weather gets nicer, So they may need a replacement spring here and there, but they should last at least 100 plus years.

I purchased a SR9 as my first handgun about a year ago and couldn't be happier with it. I expect to hand it pass it along some time in the future with it working just as perfect as the first time I took it to the range.

When one of my pistols will not rapid fire a full mag of decent to good quality ammo, I start looking at replacing something, otherwise, I just keep shooting it. I do give each one of pistols at least one rapid fire test per year, documented. 1000 rds. on an SR9 is like taking one bite out of a two foot long hoagie.
