Default 6.8mm Rem. SPC. Do you believe the hype?

I've watched 2 different Futureweapons segments on 6.8mm SPC AR-15 variants now, and read the article on the round a couple months ago in Guns Magazine. I still have not heard/read any good proof that the 6.8mm round is any more deadly than 5.56mm NATO/.223 Remington.

I've studied terminal ballistics/"stopping power"/whatever-you-call-it for quite a while, and all I'm really sure of is that even rounds with high momentum, power factor, or kinetic energy can still fail to drop a flesh-and-blood target in the real world.

I don't care if the 6.8mm round will knock over a heavier Pepper Popper, or that the 200 yard gong rings louder. That doesn't mean it's better than 5.56mm NATO at killing terrorists.

I'm not trying to defend a round that I've invested in, it's just that it looks like a lot of people are buying into marketing hype and pseudo science, and wasting a bunch of money on an unproven commodity.

Is there any good proof that 6.8mm is better than 5.56mm that I'm missing?

I just saw that future weapons too, that guy lost any respect I may have had left for him. Is the 6.8mm a good round? Seems to be but he made the 5.56 out to be a pellet gun, if someone is hit with a 5.56 as many times as he said and kept going its not about the round its about shot placement.

Yes. It has an edge in terminal performance over TAP and MK 262 Mod 1 but where it really excels over 5.56 is barrier penetration yet it still fits in the Stoner platform.

Dr. Gary Roberts has done extensive testing. Allot of it hasn't been released because it's been conducted on his own dime so it's his intellectual property.

Google < gary roberts 6.8 > and I'm sure you'll get plenty of hits.

Just my opinion but if the Brits had their way and NATO adopted the .276, Stoner would have designed the AR15 around that caliber from the ground up and we'd have had the best of both worlds.

I found a couple pics of gel blocks shot by 6.8mm rounds on the LightFighter forum, but that's the extent of the testing results revealed. I'll have to find pictures or data from 5.56mm ammo testing for comparison.

A little information here, but once again, not backed up by data or real-life results.

As far as I'm concerned all they did was re-invent the 7mm Mauser
    (7X57).

The 7 X 57 was reinvented about 20 years ago in the 7mm-08

    www.dtic.mil/ndia/2004arms/session3/dennison.ppt

Getting closer to useful data. Not the humongous improvement over the 77 grain 556 load that has been suggested. The M855 load kinda sucks though. I wonder what a gel block shot by a 55gr. M193 load looks like?

I see a large dealer in Remington Guns has 4 Rem Police in 6.8 priced $400 less than the .223 Rem Police.
To me it aint going to make it

I personally like the 6.5Grendel...but the 6.8SPC is no slouch of a round. There's still no magic bullet, but for the intended role, I'd prefer either over .223 (especially if either were really affordable).
