Default .270 or 30-06 for deer rifle?

After hauling around my chopped and channeled millitary rifle for years I'm ready to get myself a "classy" rifle. I would like a Rem. 700 or win. 70. I just don't know if I should get the .270 or 0-6? I have never shot anything with a .270 and was wondering if it's a lesser bullet due to it's smaller size, or if it holds it's own.

.270 holds it own in my opinion. 30-06 has more variation in what cartridges you can get, but the .270 is a flatter trajectory with a little less drop and a little bit more range than a 30-06.

I'm really impressed with the balistics and less kick. I'm looking for a rifle I can live with for a long time. I't always thought .270 didn't get the "props" it deserved. I just don't want to under-gun myself.

    Basically....YES

Either will pile up the deer.....I've never had one walk more than 20 yds from my .243

besides you could always get both

Now if you are grizzly hunting.....LOL

Glock Pistols.......So simple a Caveman could fix them!

trust me - you won't be "undergunned" in any way with a .270.......

People take deer, bear, and elk with .270's every year. Some even take the rifle on hunting trips in Africa. I'm not saying it will take down a water buffalo or a grizzly bear, but for around most of North America, you're good to go.

I shoot a 30.06 that was handed down to me by my grandfather. He took a moose with it and the moose didn't go far. Then again, he was using the same 220 gr. bullets I use for bear... Even though I've never gotten a shot at a bear, I know it would do the job nicely. I would use it on elk also, but I would try to stay within 300 yards... lol

Either will be a good choice. The .270 would get the job done with less kick. I happen to be partial to the 30-06 as it has never let me down. I like the versatility and the kick is negligible. As someone who was in the same predicament I went with the 30-06. This way I could use it for bear using the aforementioned 220gr. If you are so fortunate, go with both, but if not rest assured there is no wrong decision with either. Goodluck and Good Shooting

Like I said in another tread, I got the chance to use a .338 WM with a brake, WOW!!!!!! less recoil than my Model 70, More power, LIGHTER WEIGHT ,Longer range,WOW!!!
I traded my Super Redhawk for it!!!!!
I suspect it will get more use than the Model 70 '06!

Wink Re: .270 or 30-06 for deer rifle?

alot of people favor different rifles/calibers makes and models.

between the two, you will get many opinions...

and this is just what they are, OPINIONS...

either one will do more than enough for succesful hunting!
    good luck to ya!
