I just call them short nines. That really throws people off.

.380 AUTO and .380 ACP are the same. One name gives credit to it's creator, one does not. Additionally .38 AUTO, .38 ACP, .38 Special and .38 SUPER are entirely different rounds altogether.

JMB may have been under contract or commission with Colt at the time of inception. Generally, when working as an employee - the employer gains the rights to patent and design.

Samuel Colt didn't invent it, John Browning did, give credit where credit is due, that's all.
Colt produced it first, not invented it.

While I understand that, you know that if you start telling all the 1911 faithful that Colt invented the 1911 there would be meltdowns all over the forum.

Browning created the 1911 and to say otherwise amongst the 1911 worshipers would get you strung up in some circles.




When someone asks a question like the OP did, saying that Colt invented the .380 is misleading since the OP obviously doesn't know about Browning working for Colt.

It gives credit to it's creator when it's using the name he gave it or that it was given under his invention. Not all inventors or inventions must name things after themselves. .380 ACP gives credit to it's creator, .380 does not. Calling it by it's proper name doesn't 'imply' anything. Do you suggest we just make up new names for the ammunition cartridges so they don't confuse you? What do you call an AR-15? Can't be Armalite Rifle model 15 because that doesn't include the first and last name of the inventor, right?

Nobody said that Colt invented the round, except you. Additionally saying that Colt created it isn't false since Browning created it for Colt, under Colt's name. Do you think Henry Ford invents, engineers and manufactures every vehicle with the Ford name on it? Are you a troll or just dense?

As a sidetrack to the argument, SAAMI does not list any ACP cartridges in their 1993 standards. They are all called "Auto", abbreviated from "Automatic". Regardless, other names such as ACP are commonly used.
