That's pretty common practice with some rifle shooters. The first several rounds down the tube often smooth imperfections in the bore. As a result, best accuracy isn't seen until break in is completed for some barrels. A lot of match barrels, however, are smooth right out of the box.....

Some people do it with pistols and others do not.
