Default Where can I get a scope groove cut in?

I want to get a 3/8 inch groove cut into a Marlin 81 to mount an older Weaver brand scope. Does anyone know of anywhere near Lancaster where I can have this done? The guy at Backwoods keeps trying to talk me into drill and tap but thats not what I want. Thanks, Brian

Not sure that your approach is correct-if the receiver is not set to within a tight tolerance the mounts will not "aim" straight or the mounts will always wobble in recoil. Then it might cost $250 - $300 for machining and blueing.

It will not look as smooth when drilled and taped but it will be less costly and easier to succeed, even the famed 10/22 uses screw on bases.

I honestly don't know anyone that does such a thing, I'll talk with my smith for you and see if he has ever done it or knows or someone that has. He is set up with a auto feed mill, but I imagine the problem might be with having the correct tool bit.

You are talking about cutting the two grooves along the reciever right, not a simple dovetail right?

He says all you need is a mill and a dovetail cutter. I guess it is more common to have done than I thought.

He said Gander Mtn used to offer it as one of their gunsmith services.

Unfortunately, he is in the process of redoing his shop and said he couldn't in good faith take on another customer gun in the near future.

Sorry, not much help I suppose, but at least you know it can and is done.
