    Default Need "game gun" help

hey all, I'm looking for some tips on picking up a new "game gun" in the 9mm or 40 range. I had a great M&P pro 9mm that I'd use for recreational matches, steel games, and I could shoot production and even limited USPSA if I felt like it. But that's been traded for a nicer 1911.

Most of the local clubs here run informally, so major/minor power factor isn't really an issue. Plus I will still be shooting a 1911 in 45 for SS, Limited 10, IDPA, and steel matches.

But now I'm without a 9mm and I'm trying to decide which route to go.
    Do I.....
Shoot my walther p99 (30 pound trigger) in the recreational matches?
Shoot only 1911s and learn to load quickly?
Pick up a double stack 9/40 1911esque gun and run it (like fusion, caspian, 2011)
Or buy another M&P and just shut up?

Your tips will be appreciated. I already know I don't want to run a glock (not a basher, they just don't fit me). And if it helps, I don't load yet, but want to get into it soon.

I am surprized that you have a heavy trigger on your P99. I have this pistol (German made except for the 0.45, which is a German frame, S&W slide) in all three calibres, 9, 0.40 and 0.45. None have been altered from stock and all function with under an 8 lb trigger pull. Dave_n

It's not really a 30 pound pull. It's the QA so it isn't the best trigger, and compared to the 3-4 pounds I ran in my M&P and my 1911s, it feels like junk.

Buy another M&P. It sounds like you like that pistol and are already accustomed to it. Plus, I'd put a magwell in the 1911 and run both guns. Midway USA has a WC magwell for under $30.

Curious, would you say the M&P pro trigger is much different (weight, sensitivity, feel) when comparing it to a Glock? I really like the looks of the M&P pro duo tone model...

You were a little hasty getting rid of your M&P Pro, huh. I was going to get rid of my M&P pro and thought better of it.
If you want to run a 1911, Para has a double stack model that some of the guys at my club use. A guy just bought one in .40. He shoots IDPA with it. It will need a trigger job though. I shot his, heavy trigger!
He was shooting a Glock 34, I didn't like it. Evidentally neither did he.

You seem to like the M&P, go get another one....

The tow most versatile game guns are the STI Eagle style in .40 and the G35 in .40.

You can load them down to minor or load them to major and mod them out.

A Para Limited in 9mm would be nice for "informal" matches.

We do informal IDPA style nights at my club. I bought a 92FS to run in addition to my 1911's to help offset the cost of ammo. I know some people don't like the double action trigger, but IMHO it's not that bad. Magazines can be had cheap(2 for $18 surplus mags).

I still can't get away from my 1911's though.

Go with what you know, which in this case I would say would be the M&P. I'll admit that I am a big fan of the M&P series however.

Glocks don't fit me that well either but I deal with it. I bought extended controls and it's decent. I really want to like the M&P's since they are made in the USA but I've seen too many problems with them at matches. Not crazy but 10x more than Glocks. XD's aren't any better. It could be the shooter or possibly the reloads but the Glocks don't seem to have an issue. I would either go with a Glock 34 or 35. If you don't mind shooting ESP you could always get the grip reduced to fit you better.
