    Default Convert AK to RPK

I'm kicking around convert an off the shelf single stack WASR-10/63 to a Romanian style RPK. I saw on a forum someone said the Century Arms Romanian RPK is just the WASR-10/63 with the longer RPK barrel, so if this is true I think I can make one cheaper than the $700+ I see these advertised for.

    Just some rough prices

    $340 - single stack WASR
Free - mill it out to double stack
    $20 - RPK bipod
-$20 - sell single stack mags
$40 - tapco side folding stock (I don't like the metal RPK version)
    $130 - 23" RPK barrel - http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/product...tt=AK47-RPK-GM

So far $510, without tooling, which is way under $700+.

Any place to look for a cheaper barrel? Or one already pressed into the trunnion to save some time.

I haven't seen any carry handles for sale but I could bend something up and TIG weld it to sight block/front trunnion.

So what tooling do it need? Press is no problem. I would have to find head space gauges correct? Also whip up a holding jig.

It appears the gas port in the barrel is the same distance from the receiver as on the WASR so I can use the same gas tube. What about changing over the front sight?

the RPK trunnion is bigger and the receiver is also sized to take the trunnion and barrel. you can make a longer barreled ak, but it won't be comparable to an RPK. and the RPK barrel won't work with a wasr receiver/trunnion.

buy a yugo RPK, it's got a better barrel, with finns machined into it. it isn't chrome lined though. i have one and love it. the AES 10B only has the advantage of chrome lining, otherwise being similar and no heat finns.

    Ah, thanks for the clarification!

I looked at the Yugo version but I'm not sold on it, based on appearences.

Any sources for longer AK barrels out there?

i have the yugo and it's a great gun. you can try theakforum.net and check the marketplace. barrels are usually available and there have been numerous models offered with longer barrel over the years!
