M1 question
So Im watching the mini series Band of Brothers. In one of the episodes they are getting ready to go out on a night patrol. One of the guy is taking a lighter to his front sight of his M1. What was the purpose of that? Just curious.

Exactly
The soot will leave non-glare surface on the front blade so it will look sharp and crisp.

Re: M1 question
I also use my lighter to burn out any fuzz in the rear peep sight.

Re: M1 question
In a lot of competitions shooters would use a miners carbide lamp to blacken the sights, both front and rear. I still have mine and a can of carbide.
