What range do you sight in...
I am new to CC for self defense. Until now I've always been used to sighting in and practicing with my 44 mag at 25 yards and up for deer hunting. When sighting in semi-auto pistols for self defense what range do you guys sight in and practice.

Re: What range do you sight in...
Most situations in which use of your concealed weapon might be used would most likely occur at 7 yards or less. What l have my wife and children practice at the most is 7 yards using a man sized torso and head style target. They also shot ten and 15 yards at 8 inch round shoot and see targets to improve accuracy and we shoot at 8inch steel gongs at 25 yards for fun. How long is the barrel on your 44 mag any thing past 3 inch might be a bit to much for concealed carry. A 2 inch 357 or 38 special revolver would be easier to conceal and also be more controlable and accurate in a short range quick fight. Another good choice would be a Khar arms 9mm or Cz po1 more round capacity with the cz.

I still sight everything in at 25 yards. No matter what distance I shoot less then that im within an inch. Over time with my main carry peice I think Ive learned to adjust automatically for range....either that or my p229 with ctc just doesnt have any rise or drop inside 25.

Re: What range do you sight in...
This is a thoughtful question. The FBI discovered that the majority of its officers shootings were within 3 yds. (Also finished within 3 shots and over in under 3 seconds). I realize that FBI shootings are likely to somewhat different from CC shootings; however, if anything I should think CC shootings would be even closer than police.
Inside my house I have found that almost all possible shots would be within 21 ft. So I look for a point of impact meeting point of aim at about 7 yds. However, it is also important to have a good idea where impact will be at shorter and longer distances. At 15 yds a head shot is within the ability of any decent firearm, but how many shooters could place it quickly enough to matter?

Re: What range do you sight in...
I sight my handguns in at 5-7 yard then 12-15 yards then 20-25 yards, rarelly do I sight in at 50 yards. Most of my shooting is done at 3-18 yards maybe the last couple of shots in a cylinder or mag i wll shoot 254 yards.
Some people shoot well out 25-50 even 100-150 yards with a handgun and are awesome shots in close but that takes LOTS of practice and training IMHO.
I just KISS and work on the basics up to my ability. Anybody can drop in shots from long distance given time. I find it easier to shoot 50-100-250 yards with a long gun.Last edited by Neko456; January 10th, 2011 at 09:39 AM.

Re: What range do you sight in...
I use the State Game Lands in Wexford and believe their pistol targets are set up at 10 yards. Occasionally for fun I'll move over to the 25 yard line and fire a little but I am still fairly new to pistol shooting so I figured I will use 10 yards to learn how to shoot before further complicate the situation.

Re: What range do you sight in...
All of my pistols (hunting, target and defense)are sighted in at 25 yards. I do most of my practice at 25 yards. It helps hone the fundamentals. At work we qualify with our 38s at 3, 7 and 15 yards so the 25 yard practiced keeps me honed for that. I don't find any noticeable difference in point of impact at ranges up to 25 yards.
It's all fun and games, til someone shoots your bobber!

Re: What range do you sight in...
I do most of my work for speed and accuracy inside 10 yards, really within about 7-15 feet. this seems to be Bad Guy distance in real life, and once you master the fundamentals, it's not too hard to start adding distance. Even shoot a 5 inch with accuracy to 100 yards.
