    Default Postmodern Mosin

The title says it all...I'm not keeping with the Mosin truest people.

I started with a $125 1927 Tula "hex" receiver mosin 91/30. First came the ATI Monte Carlo stock then Bipod and 1942 sling. I spray painted the stock with the Krylon camo paints and added the Allen cartridge holder.

So there was the typical bolt sticking issue. Following the youtube guru's I sanded and polished the inside of the chamber and most of the parts of the bolt that rub. Also cut a wrap or 2 off the end of the bolt spring. No more sticking bolt.

Then came the quest for optics. I tried a long eye relief scope on an AIM rail that replaced the rear sight. That sucked. Next, I removed the rear sight completely to use the 3/8" dove tail rail under the rear sight and mounted a scope on that with some dove tail rail rings. Also sucked.

Finally, I cut the bolt handle off and TIG welded it on at an angle. Then I drilled and tapped the receiver and bolted that AIM rail to the receiver. Not very difficult with the flat top on the "hex" receiver. I put a Center Point 2-7x32 scope with red/green illuminated mil-dot reticule on it and I've been happy with it. Hits targets easily at 200-300 yards.

    Next step...

I ordered a 14x1mm LH die so I can attach an AK muzzle attachment. I think this bad ass 3" long flash hider will go on. It's going to be tricky threading the end of that barrel but I think I can pull it off.

I'm open to comments/suggestions on other mods to make to this rifle.

I like it at lot. I plan on cutting mine behind the front sight. If you are going to thread the end, that might be a consideration. I threaded the end of my SAIGA12 after it became an SBS and it was not difficult at all. I also threaded a couple of AKs. Anything is easy with the right tools.

If it makes yall feel beter, there is an all original 91/30 in my home.

I just wish I could chuck the barrel up in a lathe and take the taper off the end of the barel and take it down to 14mm, but I don't have access to that machinery at the moment. Right now I think it sits at 14.7mm with a slight taper. Little bit of material removal at a time will get me there.

If I somehow screw up the end of the barrel with the die, I would cut down the barrle behind the front sight. I really don't care how long it is though and I'm not interested in buying the equipment to cut the crown at the moment.

Yeah, those tools can be quite salty. Fortunately, I was able to rent the equipment for threading the firearms I did. Good luck and keep us posted.

i think it looks great and you did a good job with your mods but maybe you're going a bit overboard with the flash hider. is it possible to muck up the crown of the barrel if you don't thread the barrel correctly? if so you ruin the rifles accuracy so maybe a better solution to threading is to weld the flash hider on.

I know the flash hider is, well, stupid, but it's going to make it look sweeter I think and I really want to see if I can pull it off and make it look good.

From what I've heard from customers who've customized their MNs, you don't want to weld on the barrels.

I wasn't planning on welding the muzzle break. Just threading it on and using some top shelf locktite.

Unless I actually put something in the bore, the crown will be fine (I might make a die centering guide and carefully insert it in the bore). The possible accuracy effecting issue would be some kind of fluid dynamics phenomena caused by the flash hider being cocked to one side or something. Worst case scenario with a bad thread cut, I thread on a AK barrel nut and forget about it, or cut the barrel, re-crown, and try again. I think I can get it on straight without a problem though.
