Scope suggestions on 700 SPS
I'll soon be the proud parent of a Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC. I'm beginning to do some research on optics, but since this will be my first rifle with a scope I'm pretty clueless. My price range for optics and mounting is about $400-$500. I've heard good things about Nikon and Bushnell, specifically the 3400 and 4200 Tactical Elite scopes. . What scopes/rings should I consider? My maximum shooting distance will probably be around 500 yards or so from bench w bi-pod. I'm totally overwhelmed by zoom factors, apertures, objective diameters etc.
The gun is chambered in .308 and has a 20" barrel. Suppressor shooting may be in the distant future, if that makes any difference.
Thanks for your helpLast edited by HamburgBoy84; January 5th, 2011 at 05:38 PM.

Re: Scope suggestions on 700 SPS
You'll most likely be shooting in daylight, not real early or late like hunting. And you won't be carrying it far. Daytime in the summer can bring mirage due heat waves, most of the time it's manageable if you stay under 14 X.
So my suggestion is for something like a 6.5-20X or thereabouts. Leupold VXII, Sightron SII, Weaver Grand Slam, lots of other good choices. I think all scopes in this power range will have an Adjustable Objective.
No need for a 50 mm objective lens or 30 mm tube.
Lately I've been buying Weaver bases and Burris Signature Zee Rings.
I buy most of my scopes from Bear Basin Outfitters

Re: Scope suggestions on 700 SPS
After dropping $600 on the rifle (approx) and a baby on the way, I'm looking for an economical starting rig. I know I could spend $2500 on a Nightforce etc, but I've never shot with glass before, so why not get a low-mid range scope and see how well I do. Any glass I get combined with the rifle will be a lot better than me for a long time.

Re: Scope suggestions on 700 SPS
Mueller may be a brand for you to look at. They have a good warranty and are very low priced. Yes they are made in China, but have nice glass for the money. I have only used the 8.5x 25 model with mildot reticule on my 204 Ruger with good results. It was only about $160 bucks. They offer other scopes in different sizes and options.
Vortex scopes also are getting good reviews, but I have no personal experience with those. Good luck, Coop204

HamburgBoy, you're not alone. I'm also interested in responses to this thread. I know better things can be had for more $$$'s, but this price range is probably my ceiling, at least for the near future.
My rifle is also somewhat similar to yours. (Savage 10 PC, .308 w/20" barrel.) So your info request is right in line with what I've been thinking about. Thanks!

Re: Scope suggestions on 700 SPS
For the $$s you want to spend, I would recommend the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-12x44 Riflescope Illuminated Mil-Dot FFP, which is on discount at:

$539 for this scope is a GREAT price. Review of the 4200 line:

Re: Scope suggestions on 700 SPS
Here are a few scopes I've been looking at. I'm using Midway because it's easy to search there. I know I can shop around and find slightly better pricing on these.
Burris
Bushnell 4200 Elite (I've seen this scope on eBay for under $600 NIB)
Nikon Buckmaster
Vortex Viper
This would put my price limit around $600-650 plus base and rings.Happiness is warm gun (bang bang, shoot shoot)
