1911 hammer doesn't always stay cocked

I just started breaking in a new 1911, and only have about 150 round through it. I have noticed that every now and then when I hit the slide release, the hammer drops forward to a partially cocked position. It has never happened at the range, it just seems to be after cleaning when the gun is pointed straight in the air. It may happen 1 out of every 10 times when held in this position.

Any of the 1911 experts out there have any idea why this may be happening?

Yeah, what you're describing is called hammer follow -- it results from improper engagement between the sear and hammer.

It isn't safe. Call the manufacturer and arrange to return it immediately. Do not use the gun for concealed carry; I wouldn't shoot it until the issue is resolved, as it wears in it'll likely just get worse.

Very bad and dangerous. It will eventually start to double and triple and rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat.

I had a S&W 1911 demo gun go FA on me.
Broken firingpin spring jammed the FP forward.

Its startling for sure, the rep was impressed there was a nice 5" group at 7yds even with the FA spread

Is this happening on a loaded mag?......or dropping the slide on an empty chamber?

It needs to go back and it's really hairy if it's doing that while loading a round.

May I ask what manufacture 1911 is it?

I would also be interested in the manufacturer. I've been interested in a 1911 for awhile now, and while I want to buy an affordable one, I'd rather buy expensive and safe than cheap and dangerous.

It can happen to any semi auto firearm, including long guns. It is prevalent on 1911's that have had trigger work performed by kitchen table gunsmiths. This is why they sell jigs and such to maintain correct geometry as the bearing surfaces of the FCG are stoned and polished.

its also been noted that this kind of thing is happening more often now that a lot of manufacturers have gone to MIM parts.

the engagement notches on the hammer are pretty small, and MIM parts can have flaws that arent easily detected.

Now you see why it is important to NEVER point a gun at some thing you do not intend to distroy....

Guns are mechanical things, you can never know when mechanics fail.

This is not that new 1911 with the decocker is it? dont know the model, but some one was telling me about a 1911 DA that decocks its self to the DA position on sluide release
