Some advice please
Hi everyone!
I really want a 1911 and have been looking all over the Internet ( 1911 forum) and other places as well. I am brand new to pistols and plan on taking lots of training with a eye towards IDPS type competitions.
I was hoping some of you might be willing to offer some advice on which maker makes a really nice 1911 that can grow with me as my skills grow.
I am looking at the SA loaded and the Colt combat elite.
I "think" that either one I get I would have someone like Dave Severn put a match grade barrel and bushing and a trigger job done. My price point would be around 1000-1200 top end
What say you fellas?
Thank you for your thoughts!

Im not the most informed person about 1911's but the guys are going to want to know how much you are willing to spend. Some one will come along shortly that will be able to help you. Good luck. das

Re: Some advice please
Springfield, Wilson, STI, S&W, are all a good start. Wilson probably being the most $$$.
Dan Wesson is another but priced in the $2000's. If your serious I'd say a Springfield, STI, and even the Sig Sauer 1911's are very good ! Colt Gold Match is nice too !
Look to spend between $800 to $1100. Rock Island Armory are more affordable and not as elegant but still good pistols at that. I sure wouldn't trash one ! Start with a Springfield. If your gonna carry it too go with a Commander size 4-4.25 inch barrel. If it's for straight up shooting and competition get a Govt. Model, 5 inch barrel.
Once you settle in and learn your taste you could always get another that suits your needs exactly. A good 1911 is a 1911 though, they are pretty much the same, just minor or cosmetic differences. As you go up in price the quality does get better, but nyou don't have to spend 5 grand to get a good one. $1100-$1200, and you got pretty much all you'll need. You Can Take My Gun When You Pry it From My Dead, Cold, Hand !

Re: Some advice please
Thank you! I think I am leaning towards the loaded or the new range officer, I am pretty excited to start sending lead down range ;-)

Re: Some advice please
Is this pistol to be used for target & competition shooting only, or will this also be a personal protection carry pistol ?

Re: Some advice please
Honestly Sir
It will primarily be target range and compition gun with a secondary role as home defense.
Thank you for the comments it's a little like drinking from a fire hose
All the Best

Re: Some advice please
Are there any ranges near you which you can rent a 1911?
That is what I recommend, especially if your new to pistols.
People new to skiing ask me my advice about the sport (skier for 29 seasons), and I tell them to go the ski resort, book some lesson time which would include rentals so that you can become familiar with the sport.
Same goes for shooting!

Re: Some advice please
I'd say get the Loaded and just shoot it. It doesn't really need a match barrel fitted unless you are shooting high scores in Bullseye. I'd rather spend the money on a good trigger job......
Colts tend to be overpriced for what you get, in my opinion.

Re: Some advice please
I'd go with the Loaded....will run great out of the box with FMJ and will be a nice gun to "grow" with. Once you break it in you will have the 1911 Bug for sure and will either dumpk $2,500 on a new one or you will spend another $1,000 or so and send your Loaded out to a good gunsmith and get it all tricked out.
