W-W brass, Lee crimp die used. Heavy crimp needed. Shot from a Marlin 1895 new model. The bullet is a "Remington JSP flat nose" with a Meplat of .320. The round is underloaded and can be beefed up more but I think that it is very accurate and powerful as it is. Good luck and good hunting

Use ONLY in strong, modern guns! Also comes from the Hodgdon #27 manual. In my 1895SS, it kicks like a Missouri mule, but it has good trajectory and great penetration.

use with dacron wad. Shoots very well in my original 45-70 trapdoor carbine - duplicates black powder pressure. Have killed many deer and an elk or two with this load.

Load worked up for hogs in brush country Florida. Very accurate 5 round groups produce single hole. Velocity is not as important as accuracy. The bullet is beveled base, with heavy crimp. Meplat is .335 inches. Hard cast slug with no leading problems. This slug has been up to 2000 fps with no leading problems.

This is an in between medium/heavy loading for the 45/70 in a Marlin. I have seen and used hotter. In my current LTD IV this is a killer on both ends, its is the worst kicking gun I own.

Using a SHARPS rifle, barrel front sight with peep and MARBLES fully adjustable tang sight, this is one of the most accurate lead bullets that I have had the pleasure to shoot! At 175 yards it is fantastic!

Re: 45-70 load data
You may have to consider a different powder or a different bullet. I just checked my references and didn't find any loads for a lead bullet anywhere near that weight using IMR 4320. I found data for different powders and that bullet, or that powder and a jacketed bullet, but nothing for that combination.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Good luck.

Re: 45-70 load data
Brian Pearce just did an article on the Marlin 1895 .45-70 in Handloader No.248, August 2007. He listed the data by pressure levels, but 4320 is not listed at all. 3031, H-322 and H-4895 were used quite a bit though.
Round nose bullets are not recommended, only flat points. He also writes that primers should be seated .003-.005 inch below flush. PM me if you want further details from the article.

Re: 45-70 load data
youre best bet is to go with a IMR4198 or H4198...i wasnt able to find anything on the powder you suggested. for a good website though on load data ..you should check out hodgdons site..its got about everything youd need to know..heres the link
http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp
youre going to need to agree to the disclaimer, but after that , theres little bars to select that data you want its easy to figure out after a bit. just select cartridge load, then select rifle, the caliber you want..in this case 45-70 "lever action" and then select your bullet weight and powder or just leave them blank and it will show all the powders and bullet weights and all the listings for loads. if you dont see the 405 grain load, go back up and select 45-70 "trapdoor action" ..it has them. but these loads are a bit weaker"Hunting is a privilege, owning a gun is a right" ~ someone from outdoor life magazine..
