Sig 220 or Stoeger Cougar (previously made by Beretta) in 45ACP
I have narrowed down my list of 45ACP pistols to these 2. To refresh your memory, I want a 45 that is all metal, has a hammer, is DA/SA. This rules out the 1911 platform, Glock/Springfield XD, etc., and anything that is striker fired. I want something that is not obscure, new, and current production.
The Sig is about 2x the price of the Cougar. They both have the same capacity.
If I get the Cougar, I can pocket the $$ or get more toys. If I get the Sig, I get a Sig.
What say ye?Last edited by daschnoz; December 13th, 2010 at 12:58 PM.

Re: Sig 220 or Stoeger Cougar (previously made by Beretta) in 45ACP
Voted for the Sig. Here's why:
....I've shot one. It's a really nice shooting .45 and a trusted platform. I caught myself smiling while shooting it.
The Cougar looks nice but it seems to be relatively new and I'm not too adventurous that way. I'd prefer everyone else find out all the idiosyncrasies and work them out before I jump on the bandwagon. Additionally, I've owned a Beretta and I'm familiar with the controls. I just don't like the safety. I do, however, love the hammer style on the Cougar/Beretta.
Here's how my brain works:
Were I faced with the same decision I'd convince myself that the probability for happiness with my purchase was much greater with the Sig than with the Cougar. It being the unknown quantity. So to avoid a possible near future sale of the Cougar due to whatever possible disappointment and all the aggravation involved with said sale, I should by the Sig despite the considerable price differential.
I can convince myself of anything.

I voted Sig because you get what you pay for .....
but I'd buy an older stamped slide P220 instead of a new one. You can find them in the $475.00 - $575.00 range which is probably about the same price as the Turkish Beretta.

What he said.
You do get what you pay for. I regularly see used P220s for around $500. IMO I'd go with the Sig hands down and never look back.
Blindref, do you think you could be kind enough to tell us how to identify the older stamped slides as opposed to the milled slides that are on current production models? Is it just Exeter marked guns that have the milled slides?Last edited by rwb1500; December 13th, 2010 at 08:22 PM.

I have no experience with the Stoeger Cougar so I can't say anything about it negative or positive.
I do however have experience with the 220 and I would vote for the 220.
Here is a good place to start.

Very few handguns can measure up to a Sig 220- enough on that.
However the copy of the Cougar maDE UNDER LICENSE IN tURKEY ans sold by Stoeger is a well made and good gun and for half the price of a 220.
If you are just looking for a shooter and to save some money get the Stoeger, if not Splurge and get the Sig- less dollars for Obama to send off to Israel.

I have a 9mm Cougar and like it for a car gun but it's no 220.
I also prefer the folded slide W. German ones if you can find them. I had one and a 220 SAS Carry and I definitely preferred the W. German.
