5 vs 10 round AR-15 and AK-47 magazine length
Hi
Are 5 and 10 round magazines for an AR-15 the same length? Is the same true of the AK-47 magazines?
I'm asking this because I read that it’s a good idea to buy a 5 round magazine for an AR-15 or AK-47, because someday you might be shooting and defending yourself in the prone position, where a large magazine might get in the way.
If they both are the same length (and if there are no legal restrictions), why not just get a 10 round magazine?
Thanks in advance and have a Merry Christmas.

It doesnt matter if you get a 10 rounder or 5 rounder , they are short enough to let you shoot prone, but the biggest reason for the short mags is that they let shoot off of a rest without getting in the way such as when you sighting in the Rifle for the first time etc or just affirming its accuracy.

The 5 and 10 round mags, for the AR at least I don't know about the AK, should both be about the same length. You can only go so short with an AR mag before it gets shorter than the magwel. The problems with that should be readily apparent. The main reason as far as I know for 5 round mags is where semi-auto rifles are permitted for hunting a 5 round mag limit tends to be imposed.

Beta mags have a very low profile.
If you don't like the weight, you can load them with 5 or 10 rounds

Ten round ak mags are single stack just as the five rounders. Here's a 10 on my ak. Makes shooting from a prone easy.
You can see a ten round mag on top of a fiver on the left. Roughly double the length.

Re: 5 vs 10 round AR-15 and AK-47 magazine length
Thanks for the picture, because I took apart my 5 round AR-15 magazine and it seems to only hold 5 rounds because 1/2 of the magazine is the spring and it stops it from taking any more than 5 rounds. I was going to cut the spring enough to see if it would take 10 rounds in the same compact magazine, but after seeing your picture, I realize that I would have ruined it.
