Default AMD-65 Gas Piston Installation Near Pittsburgh

I recently purchased a AMD-65 and in order to run foreign mags I need to change two parts to US made. I bought new wood grips and want to change the Gas Piston.

I do not feel comfortable changing the gas psiton myself and would like to have a professional do it. Is there anyone in the Pittsburgh area than can do it?

    Let me know.

    Thanks

    The new rifle.

Any gunsmith should be able to do that for you, it is only a matter of drilling out a rivit, unscrewing the piston, screw the new one in and replace rivit. For that matter, your car mechanic could do it as well, pretty simple task.

You shouldn't even have to take the whole gun, just the piston assy.

I have to ask, where did you get the rifle?
If it is a US made rifle built on a new reciever with a new barrel, it is probably already 922r compliant, I would contact the importer/builder before doing anymore changes and spending money on gunsmithing that you may not need. Most current US production, off the rack AKs do not need to be changed.

    Flathead,

Thanks for the heads up. The rifle is 922 compliant as long as I use US made mags. I would like to be able to use foreign mags, so I need to swap one foreign part with a new us made part. That is why I want to swap the piston. I just need to find a local smith to do it.

Not trying to derail the thread further but you do realize that the "magazine" actually counts as 3 parts (floorplate, body and follower) when it comes to 922r.

If memory serves me I don't think you have to change the gas piston.

If you want to use the original mags then as Scoutjoe said you need 3 compliance parts.

Why not just change the hammer, sear and trigger??

Its faster and not out of the realm of the DIY inclined

Just check to see if you need a single or double hook trigger. This is done by looking at the bottom of the reciever by the trigger. If you see 2 slots there you need a double hook. If you only see 1 slot you just need a single hook trigger.
    gotta love her ;)

    well, to be more accurate:

if you see the trigger hole with 2 slots, you can use a single OR a double hook trigger, if you see one slot, you can only use a single hook trigger.
