A product that actually works and an old Mosin.
I wanted to report on something that worked well for me. My project stated as a 1929 Mosin Nagant that had been sitting in the rafters of my garage before I was born in 1982. As far is I can find out from my family it has been there since the 60's or 70's. So my dad was cleaning out the old garage and was just going to throw it out but knowing I was into guns he asked me if I wanted it first. I said sure site unseen. I picked it up and noticed some rust. Not uncommon for a gun sitting that long. The worst rust was in the breach and barrel. So after doing some research on rusty barrels I couldn't come up with anything I wanted to try. Than remember something that I used on some car parts I thought I would give it a try. It worked way better then my expectations I went from a rusty sewer type bore to a very shinny bore you can see the rifling very clearly as well as every speck on the breach. I used permatex rust dissolver gel I got at a local parts store. I put it in a squirt bottle to get it down the barrel and fallowed the instructions. I just shoot it last weekend and and I can get groups of 5 on a paper plate size target using iron sights at 100 yards standing not to shabby. So i just wanted to let everyone know of something that actually does what it says it does as I know its kinda hard to find these days.

It looks to have cleaned up rather nicely considering it has been sitting for so long. Good info to know.

You do realize that your Mosin is a sniper model right?
I would seriously start looking for a mount and scope for it, period ones are still out there for sale as well as repos.
I wish I had one of those lying in my rafters.
Nice find and nice job.

Wow that rifle looks incredible for the neglect it has been through in its life. Great job with the restore. That is a huge testament to the durability of that rifle.
God Created Man. Sam Colt made them equal.

Go to gunbroker.com and type in Mosin sniper and this will give you an idea of what you need to look for.
There are a few different types of mounts, yours needs a specific one, the PU mount, like this:
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=204947897
(I have nothing to do with this auction, just the first one I found)
Looking at the asking prices of the sniper rifles will give you an idea of what it is worth with a scope mounted and then you can decide what you want to put into it.
The bent bolt alone on yours is probably worth as much by itself as a complete typical Mosin is.
There are many reproductions out there, and I would expect to pay around $200-250 for a decent reproduction scope and mount setup.
If you are thinking you might buy one at the show, I strongly suggest you take the rifle along with you, they will check it at the door to make sure it is not loaded and then put a tag on it for you, then you can tote it around. I hate to say it, but there are some shady dealers as well as some uneducated ones that are more than happy to take your cash and then argue with you about the part they sold you not fitting, so please take your rifle to avoid this is my advice.
Again, congrats on the great find.Last edited by 39flathead; December 10th, 2010 at 09:59 PM.
