What is the point of diminishing returns for .308 velocity?

It's simply a difference between an M1A and an AR10.

The little bit of reading I have done tells me the SR25 is getting close to jumping ahead of the SCAR 17 on my short list of guns...

You'll probably get worthwhile velocity gains up to a 26" barrel or so (some benchrest shooters may go up to 30"), depending on the load. Of course, a battle rifle would never have a barrel that long for practical purposes. You can get 18.5" barrels on M1A/M14 with the Scout version, and 16" with the Socom.

You may like something like this then, it's definitely on my "want list"."
