Default How much is a 686 Snubbie Worth

I have a round butt S&W 686 snubbie (2.5" tube) that I am thinking of selling. What is it worth?

It depends, what is the dash revision (686-? or just a 686), does it have the lock, what kind of grips, what kind of sights and most importantly, what will someone else pay for it?

Do not know the dash revision, the gun was bought new in the mid 90's. No lock. Pachmeyer grips. Adjustable rear & orange front sights (stock).

"and most importantly, what will someone else pay for it?"
This is what I am trying to figure out, what is a reasonable asking price.

Sign up for a gunbroker account and check recent completed auctions. The dash revision as well as the condition are important factors in price.

My point in the question about what someone else will pay for it is general. Your local market dictates price more then what some guy on the internet says.

    What Steve said.

Lots of factors enter into the equation when pricing used firearms. For S&W revolvers, there is a premium placed on earlier "no lock" models. There's a premium on the 686+ models, which have 7-shot cylinders. There is a premium for having the box and papers. And certainly condition is extremely important.

As for the "dash revision", look at the model number stamped into the frame beneath the barrel, visible when you swing out the cylinder. It may say "686" or it may say "686-4" or something like that. The "-x" number after the model number is the engineering change number, and it is important to collectors especially, and some casual owners of S&W revolvers.

Finally, to illustrate why all the requested info is necessary for pricing your 686 snub, a used "no lock" 686 snub could be expected to be found at any number of PA gun shops retail priced in a range from $400 to $650. And it all depends on all the factors mentioned above, and those mentioned by Steve_NEPhila and others.

    I hope this helps,

    Noah
