Taurus PT709

I have finally won my wife over on getting her LTCF, but have a few things to do first. One is to find her a firearm that she can be comfortable with. So, I am hoping to find someone who might have a Taurus PT709 or similar sidearm for her to shoot before buying... If anyone has tips on this please let me know. Secondly, I was thinking of handgun 101 @ Bobs Gun Shop, unless anyone has any suggestions. It will be a month or so,until we start the process, due to Christmas, and the fact I had to put new tires on the 'Hoe. So, I am doing the research now. We are in Erie, but a small bit of traveling would not be a problem. Thank you in advanced for any input.

buddy of mine just sold one of those taurus's let it go dirt cheap too. i don't have one, but do have several other small pistols if you wanted to be meet up at bobs do some indoor shooting. i bought the wife a keltec p11 because it was small and light and she hated it. now she carries a cz 75, she loves the trigger and balance. who am i to argue what fits fits. let me know if ya want to meet up and do some plinking, just shoot me a pm or something

Take a look at a Kahr CW9 or a Walther PK 380. I have the Kahr for my EDC and like it , it's a bit hard for my wife to rack which is why I mention the PK380. It's cake to rack has a safety and VERY little recoil which your wife will love. I plan on picking one up for my wife soon.

I shot the 709 and it was similiar to my Kahr.

JEC PA, you did not even mention how great the 709 is.

I did meet JEC at our local range. I love my 709, I have a small hand so it fits me good. Not good for those with a larger hand, so we found out.

However, we did a bit of trading off and I also liked shooting a Springfield. Suggest letting her shoot a few different till she finds what she is comfortable with.

I would stay away from the taurus altogether. I have sold those and sent a few back to the factory. They have a great warranty program, cause they need it. If you don't mind having the gun "in the shop", then no big deal. Stay away from Kel Tec also if you can. I realize the price point on both of these guns may be attractive, however, the just don't hold up. Good luck.

Beg to differ with you on the KelTec. They practically invented the whold compact 9mm thingie, with the P-11. There are a multitude of them out here, and most of the owners who have actually taken the time and efort to get properly acquainted with them find them very suitable, and especially for the price-point. Size, easily concealed, capacity (10+1), ergonomics, true 'second-strike" capability and price. Did I mention price?

My EDC, I have a couple, and I gave another one to my daughter for her EDC, also. They work. Of course YMMV, but if you haven't had one and shot it a bit, you might never know.

Bob's Handgun 101 is VERY good, especially for a new LTCF holder or anyone new to handguns. My wife and I have both attended and reccommend it. About 50-50 class time and range time, good mix for a first time course. He also rents handguns there, your wife may find something to her liking that way. Mine did a few years ago, ended up getting her a Glock 19 after renting one at Bob's. This was of course before the S&W M&Ps and XDs were out, might pick another one now. My best to you both!

could not agree more. i hadn't even heard of keltec until about this time last year. my parents don't live too far from their very low profile factory in cocoa beach. turns out my buddy's father inlaw works there, so he got us in for basically the same in house demos they do for distributors and leos. this is not a normal thing for them, so opening the doors to someone who didn't even know their products spoke volumes, came back home bought two at the same shot, the p11 &p3at, the 3at is not fun to shoot, i will say that, but for something smaller than a pack of smokes and can rapid fire from my hand a very respectable group, it lives in my pocket as my BUG.

that being said i did polish everything on it and if you are used to a smooth short trigger, that the 3at is not. i payed $230 NIB

now the p11 i did send back and they did their "tune-up" on i.e trigger, feed ramp, spring. as to why they just don't sell them finessed like this is beyond me. one again $230 NIB another $60 shipped to them and worked over

mind you i have had no issues with either of these guns, except for three failure to feeds with the p3at, which has not reoccurred since the 250 shot break in.

so before anyone gets high and mighty and tells you they are junk, find out for yourself. and for the haters i own it all from kimbers to keltecs, from escorts to benellis. there are lots (and i mean lots) of great guns in every price range. its all a matter of what fits, feels good, and "seems" like the best deal to you or her in this case.

like i posted before bought the p11 for my wife sight unseen and never held or shot, and she hates it. but never in a million years did i think the cz75 being all steel four times as heavy and twice as big would be her carry choice, but it fit, felt good, and she loves it.
