Default What have you heard about the 50GI?

What have you heard about the 50GI? A forum member displayed one here and I started reseraching the caliber it seems that it come as a 3rd party add on in the 1911 and Glock format I assume in 45acp. Its a slide, barrel replacement and magazine. The advanatge is larger, bigger caliber with an awesome mushrooming round thats some what controllable which usually adds to combat accuracy and follow up shots.

Whats the downside like how much is it for a box ammo?
Being a reloader after a couple of boxes I'll have the brass, and I assume it just takes the large pistol primers.

How much does the projetile cost?

How much is the 50GI kit? It does not seem to be that difficult to assemble, you just replace the slide and barrel.

I don't need another pistol but I am interested in this upgrade.

The .50 GI does not solve a problem that really exists. I see no real improvement over the .45 ACP when it comes to combat or defensive use. Sure, it makes a few more foot pounds of energy then a souped up .45 ACP load, so what.

The only real benefit I see from the .50 GI is the "cool factor" similar to what motivated the original post. Some guys get off on showing their toys off. That has no impact on effectiveness, value or efficiency.

Ammo is terribly expensive, which discourages practice. This is not a good trait in a defensive weapon. However, this is a fantastic trait in a "look what I have" pissing contest. If you need a .45 ACP, go grab one, if you need something that performs like .44 Magnum, get one of those. It really is that simple.

I would just stick with the .45 if you want big caliber. If you want fun and cool factor in semi-auto at the range, just buy a .50 desert eagle like i did. However, I like to just keep mine in the safe looking pretty and dont like to shoot it. I love that gun but ill just stick to my .45 for carry. Thats plenty

I have an old 1911 buyers guide special (I think guns and ammo) did comparing the .45ACP to the .50 GI in a 1911 platform. The one .50 GI load they tested was fairly hot and put out some decent energy numbers surpassing even most .45 ACP +P loads. The other 3 or 4 .50GI loads in the test were pretty weak, even compared to standard pressure .45 ACP rounds.

I guess if your a huge fan of a large calibers in pistols the .50GI would be a must have. For me not so much.

I should have known if you have to ask, you can't afford it. But I had to know after seeing a over 1+" expansion on one of the 50GI JHP. It looked like that would do major damage if you had to shoot someone. But at that PRICE it would hurt me to shoot it alot.

Yes I do like BIG or any round that performs like that!!!

Whats the old saying "Why do you like 45 caliber guns"? Answer because they don't make 50 caliber guns. Now they do and I can't afford it ;-(.
