Knowing what us seasoned shooters know about this range at this time of year, I will wait till after deer Season to go shoot a few of my recently purchased firearms. My COVID related of recent ,this strain is a bad one, wife is still recovering from Covid 1 month out !

    Range closing 03-20-24

Posting this info since no one else has. Tobyhanna SGL 127 will be closed on 03-20-24. The Game Commission has posted signs of the closure a few days ago , they are not giving any open date.
they are supposedly going to completely dismantle and rebuild the range with new benches , target stands , construct a roof / canopy on both rifle and pistol range . perform lead remediation on all the impact berms.
who knows how long this will take to be finished ! Just giving a heads up to people who shoot there regularly .

This is good news, a more Modern update of the range. Years ago me and friends volunteered cleaning up the range with the assistance of Off Gildea. But like all things it should be more maintenance on a regular basis.

I hope the new modifications are like the Scotia Range in Centre County and not like the Wexford Range in Allegheny County.

Both ranges are concrete slab with a roof over head that is tall enough to easily use a ram rod on your muzzle loader rifle.

The Wexford range has the benches bolted to the concrete and there is a 2x6 rail about 18* and 36* up the support posts of the roof structure. With the rails at 18 and 36 inches, you can*t shoot kneeling or sitting. The benches in relation to the support posts make standing and prone very cumbersome.

At Scotia, the benches are bolted to a chain and there are no rails. Center County shooters are smart enough to not go forward of the concrete firing line. The benches can be moved to the rear so that a shooter can practice all 4 positions or shoot from the bench.
