Default Finally got a Ruger MKIII - Don't like it so far

I've been wanting a MKIII for some time now, but never got one because I already have a Walther P22. Last night I stopped by and picked one up, a 22/45. I needed to clean two other pistols I shot yesterday, so I also took this one apart and cleaned it, as I do with all new guns I get.

Who in the hell designed this thing? There is no way a pistol should be this difficult to take apart (well, actually, the difficult part is putting it back together) for cleaning. I can't believe part of the instructions for putting it back together are to insert the magazine, pull the trigger, later take magazine out, later pull trigger and take magazine out... Really???

This thing better knock my socks off at the range, because so far I'm not liking it.

Agreed. Any gun that requires a hammer to tear down for cleaning is way over the line. Once you do it a few times it does get easier to do. Get it to the range and put some rounds down range and you'll soon be able to overlook the stupid tear down process because they are a joy to shoot.

Oh for crying out loud... It's not exactly rocket science.

This ought to help. http://www.guntalk-online.com/2245detailstripping.htm <==It shows you how to take disassemble and reassemble the pistol.

I know how to; I took it apart and put it back together fine. The process is simply ludicrous, however.

Thanks for the website. It's top notch.

I've put quite a few rounds through both the Ruger and Buckmark and I much prefer the Buckmark. I'm currently .22 autoless so my future has a Buckmark in it.

Max, after shooting 500 rounds or so, spend another $100 on the pistol with the Volquartsen sear, trigger, extractor, and a Clark bushing. This will replace the magazine safety, eliminating all the mag in and out stuff. It will also give you a 2# trigger with pre and post travel adjustment to suit your taste. The extractor will eliminate any ejection problems. I would also suggest removing the metal tab from the loaded chamber indicator, which can cause problems when dirty. Another thing to do is smooth the sharp edges from the bottom side of the magazine feed lips allowing a smooth cartridge feed to the chamber. Mine's not a 22/45, but the same tweaks apply...

Runs like a Timex, and very accurate.
Best of luck with your new pistol.
    My Best, Walt

Honestly, you really don't need to fully take down a Ruger Mark for cleaning after every time you shoot it. I simply take a patch and wipe the gunk out of the chamber and run a boresnake through the barrel and that's it. I only remove the bolt every few months.

You should have bought a MKII, the III models have some issues.

BTW they do not need to come apart to clean.

Another option for quick cleaning is spray solvent into open action, cycle it back and forth and blow out with air compressor. Repeat a few times and your good to go.
