First-time buyer
Hi everybody,
I just turned 18, and I'm interested in buying a gun. After browsing the forums for a bit and learning a bit of the terminology, my main use would definitely fall under "plinking", i.e., shooting targets in the back yard. Therefore, I would be fine with something completely basic, especially since I'd like to keep the price as low as possible.
A gun-savvy friend suggested I get a .22 or a .30-30. Thoughts?

Re: First-time buyer
Maybe a AR platform .22, fun and cheap to shoot. there are a few different brands on the market in different price ranges. and you can add different options to it later if you like. a good rifle to use at aAppleseed event. http://appleseedinfo.org/

Re: First-time buyer
A .22 is definitely good for plinking, and they can be had for cheap. Ammo is very cheap as well. You could go for an Ak or Sks as well. Cheap, reliable, fun, and 7.62x39 ammo is very inexpensive. Plus there are tons of accessories and stuff for them. Its all up to you, a .22 is great for plinking and very small game. 7.62 x 39 is fun to shoot, cheap enough for plinking and can take medium game. Not to mention 2 legged intruders.
Weigh out your needs/wants and your budget.Mostly browsing these days, and expanding the collection.

Ruger 10/22. Quite possibly one of the most customizable guns out there. Accurate and fun to shoot. Yet still cheap on initial purchase price, and .22LR ammo is pretty much as cheap as it gets.

Re: First-time buyer
10/22 would be the best for plinking!!!! you can customize all you want! where im at i have seen bricks of 22lr for as low as $15 that is on sale, but avg price is around $20 for a brick. I have a 30-30 and i also reload my own shells for it, it is no way a plinking gun. a box of shells for that off the store shelf can range from 13-26 dollars for 20 shells. And then of course you go to your custom loaded store bought shells then they are 30-50 dollars for 20 shells.
10/22 is the best plinker for new gunner(soon to be gun addict) haha

Re: First-time buyer
I prefer bolt action .22's to semi's, so I say go for a CZ 452/3, however a 10/22 is a fine gun. If you're looking for something centerfire, get a Mosin Nagant. Only about $100. It kicks hard, but everything else will seem light in comparison!

Re: First-time buyer
Another vote for a 22 of some sort. The 10/22 is good but don't overlook a pump or lever or bolt.
Be sure to check your local laws before shooting in your 'backyard'. You don't want to get in trouble over your new hobby.

Here is another vote for the 10/22. They are cheap and very upgradeable.

Re: First-time buyer
I'd suggest a Marlin 60 over the 10/22. They're tack drivers out of the box, and the deluxe models have great wood for around $200.
