Sks upgrades
Just recently purchased a Yugo Sks in tapco furniture off of a fellow PAFOA member. Wanted some local opinions on modifications. I just spend 15 minutes with my dremel and eliminated the bolt+magazine locking tabs. The ability to remove the magazine whenever I want is much more efficient then having to keep the bolt locked back to do it.
What upgrades do you guys do?
I am all about modifying things, if it's worth it and doesn't compromise the rifles integrity.
I was looking at the duckbill replacement mag pivot. Would be nice to cut off my duckbills and have a much less dramatic magazine pivot point. Seems like the way to go if I ever plan on carrying mags in a vest. Those duckbills are hideous and not very carry friendly, if only Sks' had detachable magazines factory...Mostly browsing these days, and expanding the collection.

Re: Sks upgrades
Just be sure to keep the gun 922(r) compliant.

Re: Sks upgrades
Of course...
Somehow im not too worried about it atm, plus tapco makes a 922(r) compliance kit, which I may or may not have. Externally its hard to tell. I figured I would have to draw some attention to it in a negative way for someone to rip it apart to check.
What are the consequences for not having it 922(r) compliant?
If my sks was not 922(r) compliant, which i'm not saying it isn't...
Apparently the gas piston is what turns the tide with the tapco set- up.Last edited by Duece McCracken; November 19th, 2010 at 05:02 PM.

Re: Sks upgrades
Don't know how you feel about the bullpup configuration, but I have a buddy with a Chinese SKS, that ordered this:
http://sgworks.com/
... To replace his TAPCO setup.
From firing it in original configuration, as well as in the TAPCO furniture, I can tell you that it is much more accurate than your average AK, but a bit heavier.
Nice rifle, all in all. I DO like that SGWorks setup though... Can't wait to see it on my buddy's SKS.

Re: Sks upgrades
I've seen some with 30 round or drum magazines they looked like a long AK.
I've seen some pretty fancy SKSs, looked like a Russian machine Gun.
But the ones I like are the small collaspable stock Rifles or the ones in the Montel Carlo stocks scoped. Light, quick and accurate inside 200 yards just like a 30-30, that shoots lighter bullets.

Re: Sks upgrades
Here are the relevant parts in an SKS Carbine:
1. Receiver
2. Barrel
3. Bolt
4. Bolt carrier
5. Gas piston
6. Trigger housing
7. Trigger
8. Hammer
9. Sear
10. Disconnector (see below)
11. Stock
12. Handguard
13. Magazine body
14. Follower
On the M59/66 you add the muzzle attachment GL/Launcher as #15.
On a typical SKS Carbine, you will need to replace four parts. On Yugoslavian Type 59/66 Rifle, you will need to replace five parts.
These US-made parts are sometimes known as “compliance parts”, since they are used to ensure that the resulting rifle is “compliant” with Title 18 USC § 922(r).
The idea is to get to a point where you have 10 OR less foreign parts to be compliant.
