If your looking for cheap 1911, i'd look for RIA.

I've heard nothing, but the great thing about them. You can even get them in 9mm.

Their bone basic 1911A1 in .45ACP starts at $369, and upgraded model with beaver tail and what not can be had for $419

Edit : I did some reserch on American Classic 1911. While I don't have data on its reliability, I must say that their Commander in Hard chrome finish interest me

$400 is a great price for new. Before I bought my American Classic I searched and searched for thoughts and opinions and all I found was positive reviews. I have had my AC II gun for about two weeks and it real is a pleasure to shoot, fairly accurate (shooting about an inch to inch and a half low for me @ 25 yards) , and comfortable in my hands. Since I highly doubt I will ever compete with a 1911, I just couldn't see spending a grand or two on a gun. As with most items that come out of the Philippines, the workmanship is very nice and it's a gun that will last me quite awhile...
