Looking for public range within reasonable distance of NYC
Just to start off with a disclaimer- i am an experienced shooter in both pistol and rifles from new york (long island) but i am looking for a place where i can shoot some rifle (centerfire and rimfire) and pistols (NYS won't let a non-licensed individual touch a pistol, which is why i have to go out of state) with a couple of friends. Preferebly i would like a place within 2.5 hrs driving time from NYC. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you

Re: Looking for public range within reasonable distance of NYC
No offense to the OP, but out of staters traveling hours to "free" public ranges in PA kind of bothers me. The ranges are funded with both with state money and mostly by the PENNSYLVANIA Game Commission through our seasonal permits. I know a lot of people do not hunt and still enjoy the public range, but I would like to see some sort of restriction or permit required to use the range. Not a month goes by that you don't hear some vandalism story at a public range that makes me think that some jerkoff is going to get it closed down and ruin it for everyone else.
I don't think that a permit will fix ALL problems as enforcement will also need to be stepped up. With that would come improved safety, but who knows what else. Not to mention the PGC will still do whatever they want with their new revenue stream instead of the right thing. It could certainly be a double edged sword. I guess that is the cost of liberty?
And before anyone flames me because my profile says out of state, I am still a PA resident, pay taxes to PA, and buy my hunting permit using my PA drivers license. I am merely out of state for weeks at a time with work.Last edited by BigBoomStick; November 10th, 2010 at 03:43 PM.
