I would say that only years of experience would truly qualify someone as an instructor. Having a cracker jack NRA cert, in my eyes, doesn't mean shit. Now if you have at least a decade of firearms experience AND safety class/ NRA cert or something of the like that's a different story.

So you want to know what training you need in order to train others? Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you got training tomorrow I would not sign up for your course the day after. If you want to open a business for firearms training I suggest being the owner/operator and allowing someone else with a lot of experience and training to do the training for your business. Once you have a lot of training and experience then you can also teach others, but a few courses does not make you a competent instructor, however it will probably make you a better gun owner.

Training for running your own business or instructing people on shooting?

Neither of the two are really that easy.

The best thing for you to do as far as training to train others ... Hire someone to do that for you that already has the background.

You could hire me to do the teaching. I don't have the NRA certs but have been training Soldiers and Marines rifle/pistol/shotgun/machine gun safety, marksmanship and maintenance for more than 20 years.

This would be a fun way to supplement my income...

and it would be taking people to the shooting range giving them basic handgun safety also allowing them to fire different kinds of handguns in order to find what suites them for home protection

And what makes you want to take on firearms training as a vocation ?

I dont want to sound harsh, but you simply dont know what you dont know.

My first suggestion would be you enroll in a quality begginners firearms course such as Randy Cain's Handgun 101, Vickers Level 1 Handgun, and the like from a REPUTABLE instructor.
