If it's a military issue it should be on the bottom of the butt:

If it's the civilian check on the frame, under the barrel:

Re: 1894 to 1902 Colt D.A.38
Thank you for the help.
My had a lanyard on it at one time but looks like they took a hacksaw to remove it so if the serial number was their it's is gone.
The other numbers that I thought was the serial numbers I was told is the assembly numbers.
But that's is life. Thank you for your time.

Re: 1894 to 1902 Colt D.A.38
FYI-
Most early model Army issue Colt .38 DA's lost their serial numbers in the 1901 Arsenal Rebuild when the grip was drilled for a lanyard ring.
If it locks up tight and timing is good they are fine shooters with an excellent SA trigger.
While the chamber is drilled straight through and .38 Special can be loaded it was designed for .38 Long Colt (the predecessor to .38 Special) and that is the only round that should be used. .38 Long Colt is available in both black and smokeless powder loadings. Since the Army didn't load smokeless until 1899 I shoot my 1894 as issued with blackpowder................it's almost a given that every one of these guns rode with mounted troops at some point in their service use.
