.357 mystery

Around this time last year I was up at my friends cabin shooting targets. We had a little setup with paper targets, but also put some objects up to shoot as well. Once of the objects was an old rubber dog toy. It was a hollow rubber ball. Not very thick. I could squeeze it flat with my hang without too much effort.

So in shooting the other objects the ball fell on the ground. Having one round left in my Smith and Wesson .357 Highway Patrolman, I shot the ball on the ground. To be honest I don't think it moved all that much. I was probably shooting Remington 158gr flat JSP.

Anyway, when we cleared and went up to reset everything up,I picked up the ball and it had something in it. So I shake it a bit and then found the bullet entrance hole. Wondering what was in it I cut the ball open and found the JSP that I shot. The bullet was fully intact with only the rifling on the sides.

For the life of me I couldn't figure out how that happened. There is nothing about that toy that should stop a screaming fast .357. We were all totally perplexed.

Does anyone have any idea how this could happen or has anyone heard of this before?

I don't know of this happening before. But, it could be that the elasticity of the ball itself as it flexed reduced the energy of the round enough that it didn't pass through the other side.

The bullet went through the side of the ball and then the bullet hit the ground with the back side of the ball sandwiched in between is my guess.
