This July 1993 issue of AMERICAM RIFLEMEN was the only signal I needed to order a new Sportsman a year or three later.

Its serial # is HM00xxxx. I think it was made near the end of its production run.
Stamped on the side is “N & R GARDNER, MA”

Please share any info on this great pistol.

    Thanks

'HM' prefix indicates year of manufacture as 1998. H&R 1871 was purchased by Marlin in Nov. 2000 - so your gun was made near the end of the run for the SPORTSMAN series, which began circa 1931-32. Not much was changed in the Sportsman between H&R, Inc. closing in Feb. 1986 and the restart of H&R 1871 in May 1991. One thing that I have noticed - is that the 1990's guns have a shorter GRIP FRAME than the pre 1986 guns. Don't know why it was done but it is a fact. So some parts - like grip panels are not interchangeable.

Jim you are, in fact, the H&R Scholar in Residence here.

Thanks for the information on my Sportsman. I never would have known about my short grips. I have handled a few other 999s but never realized mine was different.

The gun is an accurate 9 shot plinker. It is perfect for teaching new pistol shooters.

    Thanks again.

    Whopist,
You're welcome, glad to help out. I agree on those guns being good trainers and fun range guns/plinkers. They're well balanced with the 5.5" barrel and reasonably accurate.
    Thanks for thanking.

My Sportsman is a 4"" barrel and I love it.

I prefer 4" barrels in all my pistols, if available. Probably because that's what my dad liked.

I had never shot a long barrel revolver until I left home. The Army introduced me to the 1911, my first semiautomatic pistol and the M14, my first rifle larger than 22 caliber.

According to my records, that's an oldie. "A" prefix is 1940 ! Put some pics up if you get a chance, love my H&R's

Just saved a worn but very nice looking H-R 22 special from my brother also have a 32 Magnum NEF in the box and chrome 22 H-R on its way as soon as my buddy remembers to bring it over. My dad has a 999 sportsman also. I love the H-R guns. Will try to get some pics this week.

I have an old H&R 199 Sportsman single action from I believe '56. 0317132234.jpg Pretty nice revolvers. From what I've been able to find the 199's are somewhat difficult to come across. Any know how true that is ?
