Do you use a scope on your 30-30?
I know yinz guys are probably getting tired of answering my questions but here's another one for ya.
Do you use a scope on your 30-30?
I recently got a 30-06 that I want to put some nice glass on (any suggestions?) and I was wondering what I should do with my 30-30. Right now it has this old scope on it that I was considering replacing. I like scopes on my rifle because it helps me make out the deer better and take better shots. Now I'm kind of considering taking the scope off of it and just use the iron sights. I will have to go to the range and see how I do with just the irons but knowing me I'll probably put another scope on it.

Mine has an old Weaver K-4 on it. Side mounted, been there forever and I wouldn't think of changing it.

Re: Do you use a scope on your 30-30?
I have a Cabelas 3x9x40 with BDC recticle on it. Overkill if you ask me but its a nice scope and works. I keep it on 4x most of the time. Can't remember the last time I took a shot past 75 yards while hunting.
If I could find another 30-30 on the cheap I'd leave it open sights.

Re: Do you use a scope on your 30-30?
My dad bought his Winchester 30-30 in 1949 when he was 20 (2 years after getting OUT of the Army ). In 1989 he said that it was time to put a scope on it as his eyes weren't quite as good as they used to be. I put one on (fixed 4X) and it's been on every since.
Oh, BTW, he has killed deer (or multiples when allowed) every year since 1949 and this gun probably has less than 250 rounds through it. He was 1 shot, 1 deer typically although several years it took him a couple to bring ithem down (and he would get razzed at camp about that). We put more rounds through it sighting it in that he shot in the 6 years before scoping it. After scoping it, it was 3 to 5 rounds per year, 2 rounds to see if the scope was still sighted in then 1 - 3 rounds during the season.
I carry a Ruger 77/44 .44 Mag carbine and I have a 1.5 - 4x variable on it and that is plenty for where I hunt.Nothing wrong with scoping a 30-30.Ron USAF Ret E-8 FFL01/SOT3 NRA Benefactor Member

Can't answer the 30-30 question as I don't own one (Savage 99's are better ) but here's a suggestion or two for your 30-06.
Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40. Dig around the internet and find one for about $250.
Leupold 6X or 2.5-8

The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.
Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

For the 30-30s, my 94 is open sights and will stay that way. My 336 has high rise mounts. I use the open sights for close shots and use the glass for longer shots.

Re: Do you use a scope on your 30-30?
Dredly, I agree 100% with you. In the thread where he asked for suggestions for a 30-30 I suggested either a 4X or maybe 2-7.
Here, in sort of a side note, he mentioned a scope for his 30-06. That's what I was referring to when I suggested the 3-9, 6X or 2.5-8.
It's a wonder we keep anything straight with all the numbers involved!

Re: Do you use a scope on your 30-30?
IMHO, the 30-30 is a great PA deer rifle. It is short and the caliber is perfect for powering through thick brush. That being said, I think it only makes sense to leave it unscoped. I have dropped several deer while running with the open sights on a 336. I have recently upgraded to a 35Rem and plan on leaving it with open sights. They are very accurate with the irons and it allows you to get the gun up quick and stay on target.
