.270 too good?
That is why the ammo companys dropped the velocity from 3140fps to 3060fps,after being introduced in the mid 1920s untill they started down loading it there was still nothing signifently better on the market. Using the original ballistics there is still nothing much better today for medium game.
Because rifles are very durable and last for generations if treated properly the gun and ammo companys had to lower the performance so their new cartridges would look better in ballistics charts and encourage people to buy new guns just to get the performance that use to be standard. I can't do anything about it, but it is a dirty trick, I quit reloading about 20 years ago when factory ammo got hard to beat in the accuracy dept. Just an old grouch complaning.

They did the same thing with the .357 magnum.
Original loads were 158gr bullet at 1450fps MV @ 757ftlb of energy. Thats today's 41mag territory, nipping the heals of 44mag levels. And the 1450fps was within Smith & Wesson's spec for the new cartridge. Today's 357mag loads are pussafied for the n00bs.
I load my .357 mag rnds into the 44mag levels. My 125gr JHP's zip out an 8" Colt Python barrel at about 1935fps = 1039ftlb muzzle energy. Yeah, that above most factory load 44mags, but below the heavy Buffalo Bore, Garretts loads.

Re: .270 too good?
I'm sure, they do other things too, like giving the velocity for standard cartridges from 24 inch barrels when 22 inch has been standard for at least 60 years, even .30-30 is given out of a 24 inch barrel when the vast vast majority of .30-30's have been made with 20 inch barrels.
They used to give revolver ballistics out of solid 6in test barrels and didn't start using vented barrels to test untill the 1980s then published velocities for revolvers dropped about 100fps.
