Anyone hunt Turkey with a single shot?
I were just wondering if anyone here hunt Turkey with a Single Shot Rifle or Shotgun ?
I am about to go out this year for Turkey for the First time and i want to use my SAvage model 24 over and under, .222 Rem upper over 20 ga full choke bbl.
Its one of the old ones, nice and light.
If you have hunted with a single shot, What were the disadvantages if any of using a single shot?
Should i use something else?
Thanks for your input.

Re: Anyone hunt Turkey with a single shot?
I shot a couple turkeys with a New England 12 gauge years ago. It worked fine although the recoil was a little unruly but was nice to carry in the woods.
Over the years I have hunted deer and bear with a couple different Ruger #1 rifles and TC 87 12 gauge which I hated it with a passion.
Even took an Axtell 1877 Sharps to Saskatewan in pursuit of bears.
Go for it,the chance of getting a second shot at turkey are slim in my opinion.

Thanks for the encouragement Deafsmithco.
By the way i see you are from Bangor, Do you know the number of the State gameland that borders Bangor, Bath, Wind Gap area and Monroe county, the one with Route 33 running beside it. ?
I tried the PGC website but couldnt find the number of the Gameland there .
Thanks,

I hunt deer with the H&R single shot turkeys should be no problem. You only need one shot for the kill.

Re: Anyone hunt Turkey with a single shot?
I love those old Savage over/unders and wish I had bought one before they became a collectible...
Yep I've hunted Turkeys with a single shot 12 GA.. I have also taken a Russian boar. What I like about it is my single is very light and makes for an easy carry in the field.. What I don't like is the recoil. With Heavy turkey loads it can really put a hurtin on ya...Now neither of those things should cross over to the Savage because it is much heavier.

Crazee, my savage is made in 1968 before they got very heavy , its very lightweight and carries easily and it is in .222 over 20ga so it shouldnt be that punishing thank God

Re: Anyone hunt Turkey with a single shot?
I hunt everything with a single shot, except for the times I use my SxS or my revolver.
Disadvantages: if you miss, or just "wing" the critter - that follow up shot takes a bit longer to make. However if you practice reloading you can shorten that time frame up quite a bit. You can get pretty close to being as fast as a moderately skilled person on a repeating gun.
Dont be afraid to use a single shot. Practice your patterns and followup shots. Single shots fed the poorest of people for years.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Thanks for the encouragement Knight, i am looking forward to hunting with my old Savage, i have 3 of them alll old and beautiful.
I will practice my reloading,
The good thing about Fall turkey hunting is if i miss with the shotty barrel or wing him i can use the .222 barrel in Spring i cant do that.

My go to fall turkey gun the past couple of years has been my H&R .223. I've been unsuccessful not because of my choice of firearm but due to lack of scouting and luck. I like hunting with it because it's light and accurate. Best of luck with your savage. I'm envious of that gun.
It's all fun and games, til someone shoots your bobber!

Sleeper, Your H&R .223 is it the one with the Laminated stock and heavy bbl?
That should make a nice Turkey Gun.
