Re: Fun but inexpensive things to shoot at.
Use a wooden frame of whatever size you like, say 4' X 5' stretch some chicken wire over it and use clothes pins to hang clay birds, fired shotgun shells, balloons or just clothes pins and try potting them from whatever distance you like, fun with rifle or pistol. In the summer set a cardboard target backer up at about 50 yards (or 100 yards if you're into centerfire varminting) smear the cardboard with a stinky old fish-head and wait for the yellow jackets and flies to arrive.
The steel (Wolf) cases the guys with the AKs leave on the range are great targets on the 40 meter line if you're into the steel chicken game, but sometimes you have to spray them with white paint in order to see them. In any event have fun!

Re: Fun but inexpensive things to shoot at.
The last time I went to the range I had my friend Matt and his Dad with me. His Dad was getting ready for deer season with his black powder rifle. Matt and I were off shooting my handguns, which Matt had not shot before (hanguns). We were getting ready to leave when Matt's Dad stated that he had a 1 gallon jug of water that he had forgot to put out on the range. We set it up at 75 yards and he fired his last shot from the black powder...he missed. I then had my chance with a S&W 686 .357 mag with hallow points and it just exploded. Matt was very surprised at the damage and I just kept smiling. Next shoot I have to take some milk jugs with me! Too much fun!

Explosives are the most fun, but aren't really inexpensive. www.bloomautomatic.com/reactive.wmv

things like ritz crackers, paintballs, small vegetables are good because they require no clean-up.
golf balls and bowling pins can withstand multiple hits and generally stay in one piece.
