Default Can .40 S&W be fired in a 10mm barrel?

    As we know, .40 S&W is a shorter 10mm.

    So, can I fire .40 S&W safely from a 1911 chambered in 10mm?

No. Because .40 and 10mm both headspace off of the case mouth.

This contrasts with a .357 magnum and .38 special because these both headspace off of the rim of the cartridge, so additional length of the cartridge has no effect on headspacing.

    Max nailed it.

However, if you have a S&W 610 revolver or any other S&W wheelgun in 10mm, you can use moon clips to headspace the shorter .40 S&W and shoot them in the 610 all day long. Night, too, if the neighbors are easygoing and amenable.

Probably would fire...as the others said, the round headspaces on the case mouth BUT....the extractor probably would hold the round against the breechface tight enough to fire. I doubt the gun would feed the shorter rounds properly.

Damn. I've been hunting high and low for a 1911 in .40 locally. Found a 10mm, but no 40's yet.

You can have a 40 s&W barrel fitted.

I found both triggers to be terrible to me so the triggers are on a scale to me.. The Glock was a crisper suck and the XD was a more mushy suck. They are in the same family, SR9 (heavy suck), Glock (crisp heavy suck), XD( lighter mushy suck), M&P(heavy mushy suck).

Yeah, but I'm wondering what that would cost me after the cost of fitting the barrel plus the cost of the barrel itself.

    Good point

I have a double stack 40 s&W that I had a 10mm barrel fit for. it was about 325$ fitted.

Why not simply buy some brass from Starline, use the 180 grain bullets and roll your own 10 mm? Can download to 40 S&W levels or go up to full load 10 mm. Bear in mind that a 1911 with a 10 mm barrel may not have the original barrel as if memory serves me correctly, the Colt 10 mm was not called a 1911. Dave_n

10mm brass is expensive and not all that common. .40 brass is plentiful and CHEAP.
