Re: Dating a S&W
post the serial number including any letters at the front. You can x out the last two or three numbers. Can get an approx. date for most with that info.

83JXXX on the butt. It has Pacmayr filler infront of the wooden grips with S&W inserts.

Re: Dating a S&W
If it is an early model 36 the serial number should be all numbers. If the revolver was manufactured after 1969 the serial number should start with a j followed by numbers. If the serial number is J83xxx the revolver dates to 1969-1970, and should have a pinned barrel, and no diamond around the grip screw.

Re: Dating a S&W
Just call S&W and ask for the date manufacture. That's what I did with my Model 36. All they need is the serial #.

When I saw the thread title "Dating a S&W" I thought you were going to talk about an "un-natural" attraction to your guns....
When you are called a racist, it just means you won an argument with an Obama supporter.

Any S&W fan should get a copy of:
The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson.

All the serial number / year breakdowns are in the back of the book.

Re: Dating a S&W
The attraction feels sooo right! Have to pry us apart as the saying goes!
Thanks for the info. Will call S&W and buy the book.
Such a pretty little thing I hardly carry it anymore. Have a SW .380 for utility purpouses and Big Bertha-Super Redhawk- for serious food collection. Been hankering for 1 of them new fangled composite pocket wheel gun.....
