    Default Suomi M31 / SBR

I just picked up a gorgeous Suomi M31. These guns are originally 12.36" (314mm) barrels but the new semi-autos are 16.25". It seems the barrel and shroud are easily removed. With many original Suomi M31 kits floating around out there, is there anyone on here who have applied for a tax stamp in order to put on an original barrel and shroud?

Thoughts: This would definitely make the rifle a big step back to the original configuration. It would more importantly take a lot of front heavy weight away and make it a much better shooter IMO.

I am going to take mine apart today and take some measurements. I have a friend who has several kits so fortunately I can see if things will work without being in possession of anything illegal. If it appear that it will work, I'm doing it. I wanted to know if anyone already has.

    Thanks

I'll get it back together this weekend and get some nice digital pics. I had it stripped for a thorough cleaning and to clean up the stock.

I've got one, I'm not fond of it being a semi. Wouldnt mind getting an auto one of these or a PPSH some day, then the weight would be justified for that rate of fire. As is, it's a pig.

If you SBR it, don't forget to find an original shroud or rework what you got. The brake is bored open for the 16" barrel from what I remember. Some people also make longer shrouds if you want to get rid of the anteater look and bypass the SBR. It might be more cost effective that way.

Take a look at some kits: http://www.centerfiresystems.com/KIT-M31.aspx

Notice that the kits have the shorter heat shield. I'm hoping that replacing the barrel and heat shield together is no issue. That's why I was saying that I was happy that a friend has kit so I can compare before starting the project. It would be really sweet if it works out though.

One other thing to check on is to see if the area your barrel attaches to is bastardized to prevent the swapping in of the original barrel. Some early ones made by TNW were not modified in that regards but recent ones were I've been told.

Another toy to put on the list, and that list is way too long.

Nice looking rifle. Would look better as an SBR.

I'd get one in auto if they were cheaper. I think the Sterling (Stenling) is a better buy for that kind of money, though.
